Michael Pfenning studied industrial engineering at the Institute for Technology in Karlsruhe (KIT), specializing in the optimization of development processes and Product Lifecycle Management. He is a certified Systems Engineer (GfSE) ® level C and works, as part of his dissertation, as a lecturer in the integration of PLM and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for the Virtual Product Development Department at the Technical University in Kaiserslautern. He plays an active part in the Object Management Group (OMG) on Standards, such as the SysML. In his consultancy role at XPLM, he offers his advice on Systems Engineering and PLM.

Electronics and Software play a fundamental role in modern mechatronic products. Bringing together data from different authoring systems like mechanical CAD, electrical/electronical CAD and Software’s ALM systems is a massive challenge for PLM. Today’s engineering disciplines typically are using isolated IT-tools to author and manage their data but a consistent handling of all relevant product data is needed to ensure the necessary configuration management.
