Dr. Christoph Kilger is Partner at Ernst & Young Advisory and leads the PLM practice in Europe. Christoph holds a PhD in computer science from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and did research on simultaneous engineering. Currently, Christoph works at the intersection of SCM, PLM, and IoT. Christoph's has 20 years of consulting experience in automotive, machinery, consumer products, high tech, electronics and semiconductor industries.

In the past, product lifecycle management mainly focused on the requirements management, detailed design, integration, and test of a product; but these phases cover only a very small part of the total lifecycle. With the advent of the IoT and “smart, connected products”, new possibilities have arisen.
Smart, connected products are the building blocks of the IoT: mechanical devices and products extended by embedded software and internet technology to connect the products to IT systems, cloud systems, and other smart, connected products. Based on sensors, on-board software, and connectivity layers, the complete lifecycle of modern products can be controlled and managed, enabling new data based business and service models, as well as optimization and automation of products and processes. This closes the product lifecycle.
Traditional product development processes are not well suited for the development of smart, connected products and new systems engineering and mechatronics-oriented development processes are required, with an increasing focus on software development.
